Did you know that this Sunday, September 13th, is National Grandparent’s Day? Since 1978, this special holiday has honored the role grandparents play in the lives of their families. As an expert in etiquette classes for adults and a grandmother myself, this celebration holds personal meaning for me. In today’s blog post, I will offer some tips for grandparents and how they can promote positive relationships with their children and grandchildren through their actions.
Grandparent Etiquette Tips

- When visiting the home of your adult children, do as you are told.
- Never give advice on issues such as how to discipline children.
- Expect to pay for food or other items. Don’t expect your children to always pay for you.
- Don’t overstay your welcome. When you visit your adult child’s house to babysit or clean, and the assignment is complete, remember to depart promptly.
- Be prepared to serve your children by offering to clean while at their home.
- If you visit your out-of-town family and are given a car to drive, prepare to put gas into the car.
- Always try to set the example for your grandchildren by asking your own children about their career and how things are going with them. Never expect to be asked about yourself.
- Remember, you are a giver who must maintain an attitude of giving, while expecting nothing in return.
- Never expect to be picked up at the airport. Instead, use something like Uber.
- Keep a humble spirit in situations where your children know better, do better and remind you constantly of the things you do wrong.
- Always make a visit prepared.
By keeping these tips in mind, you’ll demonstrate a humble, servant’s heart that will draw your family to you. In addition, center your activities around your faith, church and God. Try to listen more than talking. This is hard for me, but I have been able to identify real needs by listening, and I will not overreact to superficial drama scenes. Above all, fall to your knees and ask God to protect your grandkids from all influences that would harm them.
